(Update) Waiting Four Years for New Albums and The Cure – New Music!! New Single and Tour.

May 9, 2008

Updated II (05-12-08): Here’s an audio review of the Cure show from my radio show LISTEN HERE FOR MORE ON THE CONCERT SEE INITIAL UPDATE BELOW… –>

ORIGINAL POST: (I know this is an indie music blog… but, I have to write about other things sometimes.. and hell, at least I’m writing.. plus, there’s got to be other people that suffered through their teenage years with The Cure and The Smiths)

Well, one of the only bands that I feel the same way about that I felt when I was 14 years old is The Cure - Well, I haven’t always felt that way.. there was a period in 1999 when I decided that I should only listen to indie indie bands and stopped listening to The Cure for a while.. although I always bought their new albums and singles. It’s a strange thing when A.) your favorite bands are bands that the (general) public has lost or has no interest in and B.) Those bands wait 4 years to put out new music.  That’s something I really can’t understand.. Hell, maybe it has to do with their contracts or what have you — maybe everyone really will stop selling hard CDs and go digitial.. MC Hammer did it, and his last record sold 300,000 copies on iTunes. I don’t know.. reading interviews with R.E.M. and they kept talking about how their last albums were disappointing.. They put out “Up” in 98… “Reveal” in 2001… “Around The Sun” in 2004 then they wait til 2008 to release “Accelerate” — They universally pan “Around the Sun” — (although, I think there’s moments of absolute brilliance on it.. have you heard “Ascent of Man”?) — Why would you wait four years?? Wouldn’t you try to follow-up a disappointing album quickly with a killer effort? You wait 4 years and the world is expecting the best album ever.. all that garners is a million reviews about how this next album is supposed to be your comeback album..

Well, The Cure is another one of those bands that waits forever to put out new records (and also, every album of theirs is supposed to be “the last record”) — Since 1992’s “Wish” they’ve waited four years in between every album (“Wild Mood Swings” in 1996, “Bloodflowers” in 2000, “The Cure” in 2004 and now their new album in September of 2008) — Now, the only reason I mention any of this is because it’s hard to stay really into a band that never releases new music… This year rekindled my absolute love for everything Cure — Hell, I even listened to that CD by The Glove this year… Sure they’ve done some reissues with some instrumentals and demos and things.. (see my earlier post http://indierocks.wordpress.com/2007/12/10/the-value-of-less-reissues-special-editions-rare-tracks/) — and they’ve done a few DVDs — the trilogy DVD and the Festival DVD — but, it takes more than that to keep fans really into a band.. I’m not really sure what got me so heavily into The Cure again this year — But, something did.. In fact, I’m going to see them in Philly on Saturday — So I’ve purchased all the DVDs I’ve Torrented some old bootlegs of theirs, I broke out my old videos.. and my reward.. Finally a new album.. I’ll post a review of the Cure show next week.. but for now.. They are doin something really really cool.. They are releasing a new single on the 13th of every month in anticipation for the new Cure album..

From www.thecure.com:

THE CURE TO RELEASE NEW SINGLES THE 13TH OF EACH MONTH LEADING UP TO THE RELEASE OF THEIR 13TH STUDIO ALBUM.

BAND GEARS UP FOR US TOUR KICKING OFF MAY 9TH

Santa Monica, California, May 1, 2008- The Cure, one of the most revered British bands of the past quarter-century, have unveiled their plans to release four A & B side singles, one each month starting May 13th, leading up to the release of their thirteenth studio album, as yet untitled, which will be out on Suretone/Geffen Records September 13th. It will be the band’s first album of new music since 2004’s self titled album The Cure. Physical and digital singles will be available for purchase in store and on all digital partners.

Why the 13th of each month? The forthcoming album is The Cure’s thirteenth studio album… A lucky number indeed!

First single “The Only One” (released May 13th) includes the b-side “NY Trip”; second single “Freakshow” (released June 13th) includes the b-side “All Kinds Of Stuff”; neither b-side will appear on the album. Both tracks were produced by Robert Smith and Keith Uddin. July 13th and August 13th singles will be announced shortly…

The band is currently gearing up for a U.S. tour, kicking off May 9th at the Patriot Center in Washington DC (see below for complete tour itinerary.) 65daysofstatic will open on all dates.

Led as always by lead singer/guitarist Robert Smith, the Cure line-up comprises longtime members bass player Simon Gallup, drummer Jason Cooper and, back in the band for a third time, guitarist Porl Thompson

Also, on their website, they offer this snippet of their new single “The Only One” (mp3)

Amazon has the new single “The Only One” listed for a week late US release date — you can check that out here.

Also, in other Cure news.. American Laundromat Records is putting out a tribute to the Cure CD: http://www.myspace.com/atributetothecure — It seems to be pretty cool with contributions from Black Francis, The Wedding Present and more.

051108 Updates: I’m too lazy to try to remember the actual set list of the show last night, as it lasted a good 4 hours… So, the only way I can really rememeber the songs if I list them in chronological order from whence the were first released.. I know that might sound odd, but, it’s my system.. so below is the list of songs The Cure played last night in Philly. Oh and also, the opening act 65daysofstatic ( http://www.myspace.com/65propaganda) was pretty decent too, although their myspace page makes them seem seemingly more techo. Oh, and theyt were using Simon from the Cure’s bass amp onstage, cause theirs was broken or something.

Video: Grave Mistake, Buttnaked Butthole, Blackout Shoppers (live at Mojo 13 in Claymont, DE)

May 6, 2008

Show FlyerIf you’ve read the below post about The Flip video camera I got that’s how I taped these performances. One of my goals when starting this Web site was to provide video of some of the bands I write about on here, aswell as other bands at shows I happen to go to or happen to play with.

A couple of months ago I posted some video of a Bitchslicer show that I attended… but shorty after, my camcorder stopped working… Actually, I didn’t even own one, I was using Dave Grind’s to record MVOI shows and Entertainment Clymer’s for other things. On Sunday, as Grave Mistake, I had the pleasure of buying this new Flip Video camera and got to capture some of the action of the show I played at that night. Here’s some video clips — maybe watching some of these (because I do plan to post as many videos as possible!) will get some people interested in coming out to more local shows, and if you couldn’t make it out, here’s what you missed.

(for more live local performances check out my band’s youtube site www.youtube.com/myversionofit it contains all these bands plus my bands and other misc things related to local music or the indierock’s youtube playlist http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=36DF13FF579F7BD4)

Buttnaked Butthole (http://www.myspace.com/buttnakedbutthole)

from their myspace bio “Buttnaked Butthole is a power trio formed in 2007 consisting of Chuck Bonner, Sam Migliori, Kevin Hoffman all 25 years of age. Hailing from Philadelphia, Buttnaked Butthole is a hardcore punk/metal band with influences such as Suicidal Tendencies, Gwar, Slayer, Minor Threat and Dead Milkmen. Buttnaked Butthole has a 21 song album which was released 2007 at their debut show at Rex’s Bar in West Chester, PA.”

Check them out live on this youtube video

Blackout Shoppers (www.myspace.com/blackoutshoppers)

Loud fast in-your-face massive punk from New York City

Blackout Shoppers live at Mojo 13 in Claymont, DE (05-04-08)

Lastly, Grave Mistake (www.myspace.com/gravemistakes)

One of the other bands that I play in, horror punk from Newark, DE — Grave Mistake has been around a long time before I started playing 2nd guitar — they’ve featured everyone from Toxic Holocaust’s Joel Grind to The Black Cheese’s Joe Dugan — They’re one of those bands like Oprichniki where it seems everyone I know has been in the band, so why not me..

Here’s Grave Mistake live at Mojo 13 05-04-08 performing “The Living Brain”

The Flip Video (written for talkofdelmarva.com)

May 6, 2008

A couple of months ago the radio station purchased a Flip Video Camera (http://www.theflip.com/products.shtml)– I thought the concept was pretty cool — a handheld digital video camera that plugs right into the USB port on your computer, on-click video, good audio quality, easy storage, no tapes or mini-DVDs, it records up to an hour and only requires two double A batteries.. Now, I’ve read some pretty bad reviews of the Flip, Apparently around Christmas a bad shipment of Flips went out to Bestbuy.com and to Walmart — in fact, the first one that the station purchased was defective…

Yesterday, I decided that the benefits outweigh the bad reviews.. every review on BestBuy.com was either 5 stars or 1 star… an odd combination.. and I threw caution to the wind and bought my own. They cost around $120 dollars and they are indeed easy to use, compact and just amazing (I say this now, but, we’ll see if it lasts down the line.) I often need a video camera to tape live performances, radio clips and just things of general interest… One of my hobbies outside of work is editing video.. I worked for 8 months on a video project converting old VHS and 8mm cam tapes to digital files and finally to iPod ready videos (which was actually a few step process.. 1. copy the vids to DVD 2. rip the DVD into computer (need DVD ripping software) 3. edit the digital videos to more compact cleaner versions (needs video editing software and Audio mixing/Mastering software). 4. Finally convert videos to iPod ready M4P format videos… (needs another special program to convert) — A difficult and time consuming process, especially when you’re using a PC with clunky software.. The Flip Video allows you to edit the videos you shoot and saves them right to iPod ready videos.. It’s quite simple.. Now the video I’ll post below was actually filmed live in the studio with The Flip, but the audio was superimposed over the clip from a direct line out of our radio console.. So the audio here will be slightly better than what you’d acheive with The Flips built in mic, but, I did it this way to show you the great quality video and audio you can possibly acheive with a few very simple steps. i only used the camera and Windows Movie Maker combined with Adobe Audition to record the actual audio line out. Then a quick upload to youtube and you’re ready to go. The actual quality of the saved videos are much better than the youtube version, but if you are a frequent youtube user, than you’ll notice the familiar youtube wash over the video.

Check it, this is Ron Ferrell of Ferrell Cooling and Heating from today’s WGMD broadcast.

Great Rock From Ocean City, MD

April 24, 2008

Hey, I pledge to post more! — and isn’t DJ Suiciety supposed to be writing? — DJ, Where are you?? Anyway, I was listening to Ocean 98 (98.1FM, Ocean City, MD) yesterday while cleaning my house because I couldn’t find my iPod (iPlopper — that’s his name) and I heard a really good song by a band called The Lower Class Citizens – Then I heard that they play in OC all the time.. and I think, “No way is this band local.” So I head over to the google and find out that they are indeed from Ocean City, MD and that they are unsigned.. which is a really big bummer for me, because these guys rock hard. Are any good bands getting signed lately?? Well, check them out on their myspace http://www.myspace.com/lowerclasscitizensmusic, if you’re into quasi 70’s hard rock, the songs I’ve heard have awesome production, and these guys are just too good.. and for that I hate them!! — Just kidding, but, I will admit to a little jealousy, these guys are the real deal. Check them out.

Young Fresh Fellows, Scott McCoughey, R.E.M. “Accelerate” B-Sides, Giving away free CDs to Peter Buck, and Why is my “This One’s For the Ladies” CD actually “Totally Lost?” and The History of the Universe.

April 23, 2008

Okay this might sound crazy… but, I was on Amazon.com today buying things (not that part) — The new Tom Petty project Mudclutch and a CD by the Young Fresh Fellows and a romance novel for my girlfriend.. guess I’m not romantic enough.. and I was looking through my Young Fresh FellowsCDs that I’ve ripped into my i-Tunes and it said that I had one called “Totally Lost” — I thought.. “I don’t remember buying that CD.” So I go and look through my Young Fresh Fellows CDs and notice that I do not own “Totally Lost” — I own all the Minus 5 stuff, but only “Electric Bird Digest”, “Because We Hate You”, “It’s Low Beat Time” and “This One’s For The Ladies”.

So I pop in my “This One’s For The Ladies” CD and notice that i-Tunes reads it as “Totally Lost” — and so I check out the songs compared to the snippets in the i-Tunes store and, guess what, the CD pressed on my “This One’s For The Ladies” CD is actually their 1988 CD “Totally Lost” — It’s the packaging, CD Art, and cover art for “This One’s For The Ladies” but the actual songs are from “Totally Lost” — so I thought.. “What the hell?” — I guess it got pressed wrong.. I decided to blog about it cause I didn’t see anyone else writing about it.. actually I only did a quick search on the google and on wikipedia.. my source for all knowledge in this universe.. well, that and John Hodgeman’s book”The Areas of My Expertise

Totally Lost cover
The Cover Art For “Totally Lost” — A CD I didn’t buy..

This One's For the Ladies cover
The cover art for “This One’s For The Ladies” — a CD I thought I bought but, apparently did not.

So, now I’m faced with a dilema.. Do I buy the “This One’s For the Ladies” CD again and hope that it’s the correct songs.. or am I going to get “Totally Lost” again? — and do I buy “Totally Lost” just for the cover art? Heck.. maybe it’ll have the songs from the missing “..Ladies” CD… or, I suppose I could just buy the songs for “…Ladies” on iTunes and then I’ll have the correct songs, but just not the correct CDs..

This is so stupid.. so is my mispressed CD a collector’s item? is there some super Scott McCoughey fan out there that would buy it? I met Scott briefly after a Minus 5 show in Philadelphia.. just a fan waiting in the throngs (is that a word?) — I wish I would’ve known about it then.. I would have asked him. I actually met Peter Buck from R.E.M. for a second as well… I gave him a CD of my band at the time… for some reason he looked really pissed at me when I did that.. I didn’t want anything off him, like “hey get me signed to WB, Buck… come on” — It was sorta a bummer though, because Peter was my first all-time guitar hero… (isn’t that some new fangled video game? I wonder if he’s in it?) Actually, he seemed sorta drunk.. but, I’m not really sure. I might be saying that just so I don’t feel bad about him not paying attention to me.

in related news.. I picked up the latest Q magazine with R.E.M. on the cover because it came with a free CD the “R.E.M. Jukebox” with 15 “Essential tracks hand-picked by Micheal Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills” — I always buy those magazines with those free CDs, I love them.. I think I wrote a blog about the Neil Young one a while back. Compared to the unCut R.E.M. hand-picked “Strange Currencies” V/A cd from a while back, this one kills that one.. The best and most humorous thing about “Jukebox” is that most of the songs that Peter picked are one’s that he was involved in. The Young Fresh Fellows, Steve Wynn, The Minus 5, The Venus 3 and Tuatara. Well, since this is a post about Scott McCaughey, the coolest thing is that it includes an unreleased song from the forthcoming YFF album called “Let The Good Times Crawl.” — I totally didn’t expect that when I picked up the magazine.. so it was a rare treat.. and in the magazine, Peter says something to the effect that “Scott McCaughey is the greatest songwriter in the history of the universe” — and I tend to agree.. as far as lyrics go, Scott is absolutely one of my all time favorite lyricists, and you can’t deny the inherent catchyness to all his songs and overall awesomeness. I discovered my love for McCaughey’s music a little late in his career, with the Minus 5 EP on Hello Recording Club back in like 1994. But, he’s a fantastic talent and has really inspired my own songwriting, especially when I get to serious with myself. He and Warren Zevon are two of the greatest lyricists in rock history. (and songwriters actually, for what it’s worth.)

Supernatural Superserious (Album Version)Lastly, in my Scott McCaughey news, I was really pleased to see that Scott is credited as a co-songwriter on the new R.E.M. b-side “Airliner” which appears on the UK single of “Supernatural Superserious” (a Superseriously great song) and the DVD portion of the deluxe edition of the new R.E.M. CD in nice little mp3 files in a folder on the disc, and as a bonus track on the iTunes version of “Accelerate” — which, if i’m not mistaken, is maybe the first time someone has been given coauthorship of an R.E.M. track. I don’t know if that still stands as truth, but, I seem to remember there being some FLAC with Peter Holsapple (the dBs) where he left R.E.M. as the back up guy around 1991 (sometime after Out of Time and that first R.E.M. unplugged where Michael wore that fishing hat — and then I went out and bought one and wore it all through High School — thanks, Michael, you made me look like a creep from 1991-1995..) where Holsapple left because they wouldn’t allow him to contribute as a songwrite.. and I remember a quote something to the effect that “R.E.M. would always be Berry, Buck, Mills and Stipe as the primary songwriters” (ref: http://orangefox.svs.com/rem/crawled.html) — so the only reason I rehash this, is because it’s great to see Scott given credit as a songwriter and being allowed to contribute on of my favorite songwriters with one of, if not my total, favorite bands in the history of the universe. I just wish it wasn’t just an instrumental! but, it’s still a great song.

Bruce Springsteen vs. Tommy Tutone (Fun With Music Theory)

March 11, 2008

(From the guy that brought you Chili/Petty) — Is it possibly true that Bruce Springsteen’s “Radio Nowhere” off his new record “Magic” Is just a recreation of Tommy Tutone’s “867-5309/Jenny”? Well… Here’s what went down today on the radio..  We were doing a topic about how many across Delaware recieved mysterious phone calls from 302-867-5309 on Sunday, including yours truly. Our very own Mari Lou isolated the audio of the Tutone Wonder.. Coming in from the next break I played Springsteen’s number as bumper music.. ML interjects “hey, that’s the same song…” this is the discussion that followed…

 http://www.wgmd.com/SOUNDS/9AM/031108-springs.mp3

from the Jared Morris Radio Show 9-12 on WGMD 92.7 FM available at www.wgmd.com

Certainly not a new new discovery, Here’s what other’s have written:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Nowhere

Anyway, according to sheet music plus (dot com) – the chord progression is very similar, only it’s a half step below in the springsteen version..

Jenny: Gm Eb/G Bb C
Radio: F#m D(9) A E/G#

Of course the final chord in the progression is different as well.. Where as it does have a familiar feel, it’s “just different enough” — wikipedia writes: The opening guitar riff and chord progression are so reminiscent of Tommy Tutone’s 1982 hit “867-5309/Jenny” that Tommy Tutone lead singer Tommy Heath was quoted as saying: “Everybody’s calling me about it,”[1] and that, “I think it’s close enough that if I wanted to [take legal action], I could work with it.”

Someone then called in the radio program and claimed that another bumper selection I use “Splendid Isolation” is the same song as well.. Splendid follows this progression:

Splendid: Em C G D/F#
Jenny: Gm Eb/G Bb C
Radio: F#m D(9) A E/G#

With is a full step and a half below the Tutone song, and a whole step below Bruce’s.. To put it in numeric terms, this is the progression each song follows, which is what you’d use to determine similarities in songs –

Splendid: (Key Em) 1, 6, 3, 7
Jenny: (Key Gm) 1, 6, 3, 4
Radio: (Key F#m) 1, 6, 3, 7

So, the springsteen version is actually much closer to the Zevon song than the Tutone song.. Although, the melody is closer in the Tutone song.. Any way.. Fun with music theory.

“Dover” (by ML)

January 22, 2008

Here’s a post written by ML over at 92.7FM regarding a local folksinger:

Heard this morning on the WGMD morning show – “Dover” by John Flynn of Hockessin

Hear it again – John Flynn – MySpace

John Flynn website

Here are the lyrics -

Dover                                    By John Flynn

Elijah was a sergeant, 42 years old
from Mesa Arizona, Elijah won’t grow old
Patrick was with C Troop, Second Armored Cav
His buddies all remember how Patrick loved to laugh
Seth was from East Brunswick, just a newly wed
Somewhere in New Jersey a young widow bows her head
Daniel was from Boston shipped out from Fort Bragg
His mother got back Daniel with a folded flag

Chorus:
Oh big airplane bring’em down easy
Out of the Delaware skies
Oh big airplane Dover is waiting
to welcome the  heroes you fly… home

William was in Anbar, combat engineer
1st Marine Division, William isn’t here
Alan rebuilt bridges for Battalion B
Next to cause of death they wrote the letters I E D
Gussie was a scrub nurse hailing from Fort Bliss
Gussie had a spirit this world’s gonna miss
Jeremiah’s son cries on his mamma’s knee
There was no armor plating on his dad’s humvee

Chorus

Scrubbed wooden pallets with white straps cinched over
Long boxes of flag draped aluminum
The C-5 is crowded when it lands in Dover
The honor guard boards and makes room again Making straight for Nineveh, just like Jonah’s whale
Holy truth you swallow, overseas you sail
Precious is the cargo sacred was the gift
offered in the sandstorm from which your wings lift
Those who would pay homage can’t watch you set down
Behind barbed wire sentries miles from their town
No one breathes to question this silent parade
Except for the anguished loved ones left to say

Show Review: The Lopez, Khyber (01-20-08)

January 22, 2008

copy-of-m_5d752afb1a820fc98b3667dce82a37c2.jpgHey Guys, our band, My Version of It, had the pleasure of playing a show at the Khyber in Philly with another great Philly band. Very fun, spunky, original and just very nice people: The Lopez

Check out their myspace
http://www.myspace.com/thelopeztheband for free songs “recorded in their living room” and more. The Lopez rocked the Khyber Sunday night with My Version of It and another band “Committed” — Here’s what I learned talking to Steph from The Lopez. They met in Pittsburgh or at least Steph is from Pittsburgh, currently living in Philly as a teacher. They don’t have a drummer but the drum machine stuff they used brings forth memories of new-wave bands, and, I suppose comparisons to a more punky Blondie and even the Sugarcubes come forth. Rough and Garagey, but fun and poppy. The Lopez are def. worth checking out, at least for something different! – They have fun on stage and had the audience bouncing along with their singer.

We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful

January 10, 2008

If you saw the post below, local band, MY VERSION OF IT, was featured on The Hot Spot with Jay Rock on Comcast 73 in New Castle County. The day after, a journalist for the Delaware News Journal decided to take some jabs at the singer of the band. Here’s what he wrote:

News Journal Reporter Offended By My Version of It

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Morris

Above: WGMD’s Jared Morris performing on the “The Hott Spott” last night.

I have been so good.

I haven’t said peep about conservative radio hosts Dan Gaffney or Jared Morris for a long, long time.

Mostly because I’m upstate and none of their schlock trickles down to me.

But I must briefly point out that Jared’s band, My Version Of It, was on live television last night.

I really do think it’s cool that Morris has another side to him and tears it up in a band. However, my problem with him has always been one of sincerity.

When I hear him spewing his conservative rhetoric on WGMD in his faux Rush Limbaugh voice, it gives me the chills.

So when I settled in to watch “The Hott Spott” last night, I was a little surprised to see Morris’ alter ego unleashed on the show, which airs at 10:30 p.m. on the leased-access Channel 73.

There he was, singing about “pu–y” and “bitches” on the raunchiest television show around. (If I was him, this is where I would feign shock and allege that he had corrupted young viewers with his dirty mouth.)

He and his band performed three songs in between segments by host Jay Rock, including a segment about guys gagging girls with their genitals, complete with an audio clip from a porno playing in the background.

I think the highlight came when Morris gleefully announced that the next song was entitled “Come All Night.”

I have nothing against “The Hott Spott” or Jay Rock. He does his thing and he’s damn good at it. And more importantly, he’s honest about what he does and makes no apologies.

I also have nothing against a thrashing rock band with down and dirty lyrics.

But when you have a guy like Morris on the radio blathering like he’s the chief of the morality police during the day while spending his nights reveling in the blue side of things, it’s totally hypocritical.

If his listeners on WGMD saw that program, they would have dropped their knitting needles in shock!

Labels: , ,

The other inaccuracy was to describe the radio show as “A Conservative Talk Show” — here’s a recent clip from the show http://www.jared-morris.com/radio/conservative.mp3

Here’s what Matt from MVOI had to say:

At 10:37 AM, Anonymous Matt said…
Ryan, you’re right. Myself and the other members of the band will now demand that Jared wear a business suit to all shows and that he change all lyrics to be about Ronald Reagan.P.S. We actually played 4 songs. They were:Lesson 113
Lesson 038
Lesson 116
Lesson 103

116 is parenthetically titled “Quhm Aw Nyte,” not “Come All Night.” Get your mind out of the gutter.

And here’s what J Rock himself had to say:

What’s that all about? He should come on and respond or at least thru an email.
